Thammasat Thammarak Center is like a home where we can be with our loved ones during their final moments and create beautiful final memories together.

From the previous episode, the admin took everyone to see the work of both front and back staff in the fight against the COVID-19 crisis. In this episode, the admin will take everyone to see the work behind the scenes, which is more interesting than in the previous episodes. Work that does not rely only on the subjects taught in books and courses, but is work that uses humanity and the heart, which no course can teach.

End-of-life care center “Thammasat Thammarak Center”

A place that many people may call a “place to wait for death” or some people may not have known about it before. Today, Ms. Kanthima Churit, Director of the Thammasat Thammarak Center, will take us to know and understand why we need a place to wait for death.

    “Meet to leave happily”

Many people may call a hospice center a place to wait for death, which is not wrong at all. The time waiting for death, even though it is short, is very valuable to the patient and family. At this place, patients can express their wishes and spend time with their families to the fullest before the time comes to say goodbye.

“Why isn’t there a place where they can hold hands and hug each other as a final farewell?”

Most Thais have the idea that if they are going to die, they want to go back home to die. However, due to many factors, some patients are unable to spend their last moments at home. Therefore, Thammasat Thammarak Center was established to care for terminally ill patients who are not feeling well, allowing them to pass away peacefully and have the opportunity to spend time with their families as they wish in an environment that is like their second home.

“It comes from our hearts that we truly want to help the person in front of us to be good.”

Within Thammasat Thammarak Center, there are 8 nurses, 7 nursing assistants, and 8 nursing assistants. Everyone comes to work here with a true heart. Nursing is not about physical treatment to continue living, but about nursing to create the best memories in the final moments of life, which is not taught in the nursing curriculum. But everyone uses humanity, understanding, and their hearts to take the best care of every patient.

The value of the work done, what you encounter, what you see.”

Working here is not easy. Even though we understand the truth of birth, aging, illness and death, everyone takes care with their hearts. Therefore, it is inevitable that sometimes the staff themselves feel the same emotions as the patients because it comes from the bond that comes from taking care of each other. What can heal the staff’s hearts is seeing the value in what they do each day, the smiles, the tears and the beautiful memories gained from working here.

“A home, a family, for everyone who needs shelter.”

At Thammasat University, Thammaraksa Center takes care of patients who are likely to die within 14 days, most of whom will have symptoms that indicate early signs. There will be discussions with doctors about how to support the patient, discussions with the patient’s family about the patient’s and family’s needs, and there will also be care for bedridden patients who are unable to care for themselves, sometimes the family may not be ready to provide care due to various factors.

“We take care of you from head to toe.”

What the center does every day is: How do you look today? Are you smiling? Is there anything unusual about your body? Are you experiencing any symptoms? Are there any wounds?

If the patient can help themselves, the nurse will advise, monitor and provide assistance in areas where the patient cannot help themselves. However, if the patient cannot help themselves at all, the nurse will clean them from head to toe and check for any symptoms of illness.

“What we always get is the word ‘thank you’.”

The intention of establishing this center is not only to be a place of refuge for patients, but families and relatives also need emotional support because losing someone we love forever is too much to bear. The work of all personnel here includes providing understanding, being a place of refuge, listening, and being a comforter when the patient’s family is weak.

“There is still one team here that is ready to understand.”

In the past, some families have encountered the problem of not being able to look after their parents or children during the time they are near death. Many times, the patient’s family can only wait to receive a call from the hospital to tell them how the patient’s condition is. No matter how much they want to be there or how close they are, they cannot. That is something that Thammasat Thammarak Center sees and would like to tell everyone that this place understands and is ready to respond to that need for everyone.

To terminally ill patients and their families

If you are looking for someone who understands you, looking for a place that will help you spend time with your loved one in their final moments, or wanting help in having someone to care for your loved one so that they pass away peacefully, you can contact the Thammasat Thammarak Center page or call 095-464-9783 for direct consultation.

“We will take care of you, let you go peacefully, and leave without any worries.”

    Conclusion

In Thailand, this is a new thing. We have the desire to go back home and die, but when our desire is denied by factors such as symptoms, location, convenience, or medical advice from doctors, we often have to accept it. We have to lose our loved ones or people around us, sometimes not even in time to say goodbye or be by their last moments.

Therefore, from all the problems here, it is a solution that answers the needs of everyone who has encountered or thinks that they will encounter in the future. Thammasat Thammarak Center can be a home that allows us to be with our loved ones during their final moments and create beautiful memories together.

“Everyone deserves to have beautiful memories, whether they are dead or living.”
