    Social Security: What benefits do working people get from having it?

    Social Security for salaried employees who have registered as insured persons under Section 33. Today, do we know what benefits we have from the money that is deducted from our salaries each month?

    Social security is the creation of a guarantee of living for members who have income and pay contributions to the Social Security Fund to be responsible for sharing the risks that may arise from illness, childbirth, disability, death, child support, old age, and unemployment in order to receive medical treatment and continuous income replacement. Insured persons under the social security system are divided into 3 sections: Section 33, Section 39, and Section 40.

    According to information from the Social Security Office, insured persons under Section 33 are employees who are no less than 15 years of age and no more than 60 years of age on the date of employment and work in an establishment with at least 1 employee.

    Benefits for insured persons under Section 33

    1. For pregnant insured persons, they will receive social security benefits, which include the following:

    • The cost of 5 prenatal check-ups and care is not more than 1,500 baht.
    • Maternity expenses at any hospital, lump sum 15,000 baht
    • Maternity leave compensation at a rate of 50 percent of wages for 90 days (can be claimed no more than 2 times)

    2. For insured persons who have children, they will receive social security benefits, which include the following:

    • Child support will be provided in a lump sum of 800 baht per month/child from birth to 6 years of age, with a maximum of 3 children at a time. In cases where both the father and mother are insured, only one party can use the benefit.

    3. For insured persons, they will receive a free health check-up covering 14 items as follows:

    • Hearing Screening Finger Rub Test
    • Breast examination and teaching of breast self-examination
    • Eye examination, screening for abnormalities and searching for eye diseases
    • Complete blood count (CBC)
    • Urine test UA
    • FBS blood sugar test
    • Check kidney function Cr and eGFR
    • Blood fat test: Total cholesterol & HDL cholesterol
    • HBsAg hepatitis virus test
    • Pap Smear Cervical Cancer Screening
    • Cervical cancer screening Via
    • HPV DNA TEST: 2 types and 14 types
    • Colon and rectal cancer screening FIT TEST
    • Chest X-ray

    4. For insured persons, they will receive the following dental benefits:

    • Tooth extraction, tooth filling, tartar removal and wisdom tooth extraction, actual cost not exceeding 900 baht/person/year.
    • Dentures are actually paid for, not exceeding 1,300-4,400 baht, according to the criteria.

    5. For insured persons, in the event of a work-related accident, they will receive the following rights:

    • Injuries or accidents that are not work-related, receive free treatment at a hospital under your rights and receive 50% of your monthly salary as compensation for lost income.
    • Injuries or accidents due to work, receive free treatment at hospitals under the agreement and receive 70% of monthly wages as compensation for lost income.
    • In case of disability, the loss is more than 50% severe, receive monthly compensation for life at the rate of 50% of the wage.
    • In case of disability, loss is not severe, from 35 – 49 percent, receive monthly compensation at the rate of 30 percent of wages, not exceeding 180 months.

    6. For insured persons, in the event of resignation or termination of employment, they will receive the following rights:

    • Resignation / termination of employment contract will receive compensation at the rate of 30 percent of salary, not exceeding 90 days.
    • Laid off: Receive compensation at a rate of 50 percent of wages for no more than 180 days.

    7. For insured persons, when the insured person reaches old age, they will receive benefits in the form of retirement benefits, pensions, and others as follows:

    • In the case of receiving a retirement pension, having paid contributions for less than 12 months, receiving old age benefits for the insured person only.
    • In the case of receiving a retirement pension, having paid contributions for 12 months or more but not exceeding 180 months, receive old age benefits for the insured person, together with employer contributions and benefits.
    • In the case of receiving a pension, if contributions have been paid for 180 months, receive a pension of 20% of the average salary of the last 60 months (paid monthly for life).
    • In the case of receiving a pension, having paid contributions for more than 180 months, the old age pension rate will be increased by 1.5% / every 12 months of contribution payment period.
    • Funeral expenses: Receive 50,000 baht in all cases.
    • Death benefit: Pay contributions for at least 36 months but less than 120 months, receive money at the rate of 50 percent of the average salary for 4 months.
    • Death benefit: Pay contributions for 120 months or more and receive 50 percent of the average salary for 12 months.

    In addition, from April 1, 2024, the frequency of health check-ups has been increased to be consistent with age factors and the need for check-ups, such as:

    • Age 35 and above, receive blood sugar, blood fat, kidney function, urine test, and X-ray examination.
    • Dental services can be accessed at both government and private hospitals or clinics without prior appointments, and mobile dental vehicles have been added to increase convenience in receiving dental services.
    • In the event of a critical emergency, insured persons can seek free treatment for 72 hours at both government and private hospitals.
    • Bone marrow transplantation (hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) for the treatment of 8 types of blood cancer can be performed. The transplantation of cells covers all transplantation methods using one’s own tissue, tissue from siblings and tissue from donors through the Thai Red Cross Society for free.
    • Access to treatment for sleep apnea, which requires a CPAP machine, by paying for the CPAP machine and sleep tests for patients who need treatment for sleep apnea.

    Salarymen who are insured under Section 33, do not forget to check your coverage rights at the Social Security Office, which always has updates so that you do not miss out on the benefits that insured persons should receive through the online channels of the Social Security Office.
