Sarah McBride becomes first transgender woman to become senator in US elected history

In the matter of human rights , it is said that all human beings have rights and dignity that are naturally present in humans since birth, including freedom and equality that are guaranteed or protected by law, which is guaranteed and accepted worldwide.

But in reality, there are some groups of people who are discriminated against, looked down on, despised, looked down on, or even prevented from having opportunities in society, such as being prevented from working or studying, especially the group of people with diverse sexualities or LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), which is currently increasing in number both in Thailand and abroad.

Figure 1: Human Rights – LGBT

In our country, it is believed that the number of LGBT people is quite large. However, many people may not dare to reveal their true gender identity. Part of the reason may be because society still has a lot of prejudice against LGBT people. Revealing their identity may be a risk to their career and life.

But in foreign countries, many countries have begun to accept LGBT people more. For example, Taiwan is the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. And there is Ms. Audrey Tang, a brilliant transgender woman who is the digital minister, or the leader of the world’s most valuable organization, Apple, Tim Cook, who has also come out and revealed that he is gay.

And there are many more examples in many countries that show that society is becoming more open and accepting of different genders, and it is an inspiration for those who are fighting for equal rights in society.

Today is also another day in the history of the United States, not only because it is the 2020 US Presidential Election (which will soon be known who will be the 46th President of the United States, whether it will be the same person or a new person, the results will be known for sure: written on November 5, 2020)

But it was “the day the 2020 US presidential election was rainbow colored.”

Delaware has a new senator, Sarah McBride , who is the first transgender senator.

“ Transgender or transgender people are people who are satisfied with a gender or gender identity that is opposite to their birth sex, which usually means those who have been reassigned to their desired gender.”

Sarah McBride won over Republican opponent Steve Washington in the Delaware primary on Tuesday night (November 4, 2020, Thailand time). She is a strong advocate for human rights, particularly LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning) issues, making her the first transgender or transgender person to become a United States senator.

Sarah McBride, now 30, works as a press secretary for the Human Rights organization, which promotes human rights, especially LGBTQ issues, and was an intern at the White House during President Obama’s term.

    Figure 3: Taylor Small

And that’s not all. In Vermont, Taylor Small became the first transgender person to serve in the Vermont House of Representatives. Taylor Small, now 26, works as the Director of the Health and Wellness program at the Pride Center in Vermont and has experience working in mental health and counseling and support services.

    Figure 4: Ritchie Torres

In the South Bronx, New York, Ritchie Torres is the first openly gay black person to become a member of Congress. At 32, Ritchie Torres defeated Republican incumbent Patrick Delices. He said, “He showed everybody that you can go from being a poor, LGBTQ black kid to being a member of Congress.”

LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning)
    Figure 5: Mondaire Jones

Still in New York, NY-17 District Mondaire Jones, 33, is another gay black man who is running for Congress, defeating Republican Maureen McArdle Schulman. Mondaire Jones is a lawyer and graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School.

The victory in the New York State election, in which an openly gay elected person was elected, shows that society is open-minded and inclusive, and that gender is not the main consideration, and that society truly values equality.

    Lessons from the US Election

It’s not just the issue of the race between candidates to become the President of the United States in 2020, because many people are focusing on who will lead the country. As we know, the United States is a large economy and is influential in many areas.

Who will win this time? Who will be the 46th President of the United States? It has a huge impact on the world economy and the rules that will follow. So it is something that many countries are watching to see who will be the next President of the United States, which will likely be a long movie. If the original person is not elected, there will certainly be many lawsuits.

But this election shows a very significant change in the matter of human rights or Human Rights. LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning) people have become accepted and led to participation in the administration of the country.

Back home, we will have to keep an eye on this issue because there are groups of people or individuals representing the LGBTQ group who have come out and tried to support LGBTQ to be accepted in society, such as Ms. Anne Jakrapob Jakrajutatip, the talented executive of JKN Global Media Co., Ltd., who has come out to talk about LGBTQ. She has shown herself as an example that transgender women can also be successful and called for society to be more open-minded and accept LGBTQ people.

If in our country, many leaders of organizations dare to come out and accept it like Tim Cook or Anne Jakkaphong, or if celebrities in society, such as stars or actors, dare to be more open, LGBTQ will become something that society accepts quickly and easily.

“Maybe soon we will see our ministers openly identifying as LGBTQ.”
