James Dyson, a genius inventor from England, owner of the famous and very successful Dyson company. But before reaching this point, what tough trades and obstacles did he have to go through? Let’s follow his story in this article.

In terms of success, I believe everyone wants to be successful. But if they say that if you want to be successful, you have to wait for 15 years, will you wait? Before reaching the point of success, you have to take action, but you may fail at least a thousand times. Will you still do it?

For many people, just a few failures or having to wait 4-5 years before they succeed is too much. They will definitely become discouraged and give up halfway.

But there are some people who have determination, belief and a good attitude towards failure or mistakes in a different way than most people.

He is Sir James Dyson (in this article, I will refer to him as James Dyson). Who is he?
    James Dyson, the genius inventor
    Figure 1: Sir James Dyson

He is the owner and founder of Dyson Ltd, a British technology company. He is the inventor of innovative vacuum cleaners, cordless and bagless, as well as many other innovative products such as Air Purifier, Hair Dryer, and others. As a result, Dyson has become a company with a turnover of 4.4 Billion GBP and a net profit of 656 Million GBP in 2018.

    Figure 2: Dyson’s Financial Result 2016 – 2018

James Dyson, now 73, is ranked 268th among the world’s richest people, with a current net worth of 6.5 billion US. But before he could reach this point, he had to go through many tough lessons and tests, and some of them were so tough that they almost bankrupted him.

What is the story of James Dyson’s journey from failure to success? And what can we learn from this story? Let’s learn together.

    “Anyone can be an innovator.”

Being creative or having initiative is not a skill that you are born with. This skill can be developed and trained. And it is not even necessary to graduate in these fields to become an Innovator or inventor. If we know ourselves and really want to be an Innovator, there are always opportunities on this road for us.

For example, James Dyson, he is the owner of a cutting-edge innovative company, but he did not graduate with a degree in engineering. His beginnings as a child, he studied at an art school. After studying for a while, he discovered that he liked design more than studying general art. So he switched to study industrial design at the Royal College of Art. And this is the beginning of James Dyson’s path to becoming an inventor.

    Figure 3: Rotork Sea Truck

While studying in 1970, at the age of 23, James Dyson was given the opportunity to design the Rotork Sea Truck, a high-speed tanker that could travel at 50 miles per hour and could be docked without the need for a berth. The tanker was used in a variety of industries, including the oil and construction industries, as well as the British military.

“Mistakes as an Important Part of the Learning Process”

Being an innovator or inventor, sometimes we only look at the invention of new innovations, and may forget about other important aspects, such as patents. How important are patents?

When our product is patented, the government will provide protection for the invention or product design to us, giving us the exclusive right or right to exploit the patented invention or product design within the period specified by law.

    Figure 4: Ballbarrow

James Dyson also ran into patent problems. In 1974, he invented the Ballbarrow, a plastic cart with ball wheels instead of regular wheels that not only didn’t rust, but also didn’t sink into soft soil or stick to concrete when pushed. However, a patent failure forced him to sell the Ballbarrow to investors. It was a lesson he was determined not to make again with his next invention.

“Be an innovator not an imitator”

Be an inventor, not a copycat. Why are Dyson vacuum cleaners so clearly different from others? Because James Dyson invented products in the way of an inventor, focusing on the pain points of consumers. This is different from other manufacturers that we commonly see, who, when they see someone launching a new product, quickly make a similar product and create a difference by using a lower price.

Before becoming the Dyson vacuum cleaner, the beginning happened when James Dyson was cleaning the house and he found out why vacuum cleaners (at that time) when used for a long time, the efficiency became less and less because the dust bag got clogged easily, causing less suction power and having to blow the filter frequently. And the longer it was used, the more the filter had to be changed. Because of the annoyance, he got up and thought of inventing a vacuum cleaner that didn’t need a filter at all. And this was the important starting point of the Dyson business.

    “Inspiration can come from anywhere”

Inspiration to innovate can come from anywhere. James Dyson applied his engineering expertise, the Cyclone Particle Collector, to the bagless vacuum cleaner he wanted.

The principle is that he took the method of the Cyclone Particle Collector, which is using centrifugal force to separate small particles from the air, and applied it to improve the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner, and the dust bag was no longer necessary. This teaches us that what we have learned or past experiences can always be applied and developed further. The admin found that many times, Cross Industry Case Studies are also useful.

Figure 5: James Dyson with his prototype
“Failure is part of learning and innovation”

Even if you have a good idea, it will be useless if you don’t put it into action. But sometimes you have to face a situation that tests your courage, like in the case of James Dyson. The idea may seem easy, but the actual implementation is very difficult. This is because the Cyclone Particle Collector is a tool on a scale used in factories or in the industrial sector, and the leaders in vacuum cleaners at that time, Electrolux and Hoover, were not able to make it.

But James Dyson was determined to make the vacuum cleaner he wanted to make. He spent more than 5 years working on the vacuum cleaner and produced 5,126 unusable prototypes (which means that on average, he made about 2-3 mistakes per day).

“Mistakes are good things, part of the progress we make.”

And finally, he succeeded in his 5,127th attempt, becoming the world’s first prototype bagless vacuum cleaner.

Figure 6: James Dyson and his prototype
    “Never Give Up”

The path to true success is still long. Although the prototype is successful, the next problem is that it must be produced by someone, which will certainly be blocked by the market leader at that time, Hoover. It took James Dyson quite some time before he was finally able to sell the production license to Amway.

In no time, James Dyson was betrayed by Amway. Amway released a new bagless vacuum cleaner that looked exactly like Dyson’s vacuum cleaner. But that didn’t discourage James Dyson (if it happened to me, I would have given up). He continued to move forward to develop the product. Along the way, he had to face huge debts, almost going bankrupt.

Finally in 1993, he came across Apex Inc., a Japanese company that was interested and decided to buy Dyson’s license to develop the G-Force vacuum cleaner. With the overwhelming sales of the G-Force vacuum cleaner in Japan, James Dyson was able to establish his own company, Dyson.

“Did you know that the Dyson digital motor in vacuum cleaners is 5 times faster than a Formula One car?”

Until now, Dyson has more than 12,000 employees worldwide. Dyson’s products have proven to be very successful. As a result, in 2018, the company had revenue of 4.4 Billion GBP and a net profit of 656 Million GBP, which is 26% more than in 2017.

Figure 8: James Dyson with several blade-less fan prototypes
There are many more aspects of the story of Sir James Dyson, the genius inventor, that we can still learn more about, as follows:
    “Build Resilience to Criticism”

Knowing how to manage yourself and deal with criticism. From the story of James Dyson, we will find that throughout his journey to success, he had to go through many negative criticisms. However, he did not let those things destroy his determination. He chose to accept and choose to see only the useful criticisms.

For him, rejection is considered a normal thing to encounter. If we remain confident and believe in what we do, we will eventually meet the right person.

    “Never be afraid to fail”

Don’t be afraid of failure and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. For James Dyson, it took him 5 years and made more than 5,000 mistakes, but he didn’t see it as a mistake. He chose to see it as progress in what he was doing.

“Believe in your purpose and fight hard for your dreams”

Believe in what we will do and do our best to achieve our goals and dreams because nothing comes easy. Everything will have to go through action and trial and error. So if you want to be successful in anything, if we fail or make a few mistakes, please look at Sir James Dyson ‘s example as a guideline and encouragement for us to continue fighting against obstacles.

And that’s the story of Sir James Dyson, the genius inventor who turned an ordinary vacuum cleaner into a vacuum cleaner that many homes would like to have.

“We don’t learn much when we succeed, but we learn a lot when we fail.” – Sir James Dyson
