Mindset – Using your mind to overcome fate is a translated book from the original English version, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. The author is Carol S. Dweck, a famous psychologist and professor from Stanford University. She has studied the factors that make people successful and has come up with interesting ideas as follows:

Mindset - Can Using Your Mind to Overcome Destiny Really Make You Successful?
Figure 1: Carol S. Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.

“Success or failure depends on just two types of thinking. Which one are we thinking?”

In the first type, we will be a person who is only halfway successful. And in the second type, we will be able to develop in leaps and bounds, and be able to achieve continuous success even though we have no advantages in life. This is the idea from just some of the contents of this book.

Using your mind to overcome fate, can you really overcome failure?

If we adhere to the principle of reality, that is, “The mind is the master, the body is the servant” or “Whatever you think, so will you get”, this confirms that our own thoughts are what really affect our success and failure.

In the book Mindset – Using your mind to overcome your destiny, it is a best-selling psychology book for 10 years in a row, including this concept that has been talked about a lot in various circles. We may have heard of it before, such as Fixed Mindset or Growth Mindset. This book tells the story of 2 types of human mindsets, which are Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset.

    • Fixed mindset is a mindset or attitude that is old or stuck in the old frame, afraid of making mistakes, not daring to take risks even though there are many positive factors supporting it, etc. Many of these problems cause the organization to grow slowly and inconsistently. Having a fixed mindset may cause mistakes or miss opportunities to learn in various areas. Or, to summarize simply, a fixed mindset is an old-fashioned mindset that believes in the old ways and is afraid to learn and develop oneself.
    • Growth mindset is a mindset or attitude that can be developed and developed further, resulting in continuous development and learning of new things until it is very effective. Developing a thinking system is a mindset that will help the organization move forward steadily and reach its goals. In simple terms, a growth mindset is a very good mindset that does not cling to and does not trust old ideas. It is ready to learn and dares to try new things all the time.

The reason why we are unhappy in life is that we don’t truly understand ourselves.

Most people often face similar situations or problems, such as feeling like they have to endure something that is not right for them, or feeling like they are not free, or feeling like they are lacking all the time, or some people have to work hard to prove themselves, have to create their own identity all the time, or others. These problems or behaviors are all caused by not understanding oneself.

“Although people have different starting points, we can always create and change our own lives to be better.”

By nature, people can have both mindsets. However, if someone has a growth mindset, they will be able to change their mindset and attitude easily. Or if they are in a fixed mindset mode, they may be able to develop it, but it may be more difficult and they may eventually give up trying to do it.

Humans can have both mindsets depending on the situation or environment they live in (which also affects their mindset). People with a developmental mindset can easily change their mindset from negative to positive. However, people with a fixed mindset may be able to develop their mindset, but it may be more difficult because they still have negative thoughts and beliefs, and they tend to give up on their efforts in the near future.

In terms of mindset, especially the Growth Mindset framework, it can be applied to everyday life, such as in studies, leadership, work, family relationships, or other matters.

Therefore, understanding the concept of mindset will help improve our lives because when we understand ourselves more, know what our life goals are, what we want, and we don’t have to do things like others, we don’t have to rely on fate or believe that we have talent to succeed anymore.

    Conclusion

After the admin read this book, it made us know what kind of mindset can be developed (Growth Mindset) and what kind of mindset is fixed (Fixed Mindset) and how our mindset can be changed and developed depending on us. What kind of mindset do we want to be in?

To give a simple picture of what kind of thinking will result in what kind of outcome, for example:

People who are in a fixed mindset
    • “Success can only come from having talent.” [If we believe this and we don’t have talent, we will think that there is no chance for us to succeed.]
    • “A challenge is an obstacle or a pressure.” [If we believe this, we will think that this is difficult and that we will definitely not succeed.]
    • “Mistakes or disappointments are our own failures.” [If we believe this, we will think that mistakes or disappointments are shameful. We will not want to try new things because we are afraid that if we fail, society or people around us will gossip or laugh at us. In short, it is better to do nothing.]
    • “Mistakes or disappointments are our own failures.” [If we believe this, we will think that mistakes or disappointments are shameful. We will not want to try new things because we are afraid that if we fail, society or people around us will gossip or laugh at us. In short, it is better to do nothing.]
People who are in a growth mindset
    • “Success comes from effort.” [If we believe this, even if we have no talent and no one to help us, we will not be afraid to do it or will be determined to continue doing it.]
    • “Ability, ability and skills can be developed.” [If we believe this, we will think that even if we don’t know how to do this today because it’s new, we can learn about it. And if we study and do it, we can become good at it and develop further.]
    • “A challenge is an opportunity to develop yourself and grow.” [If we believe this, we will find difficult things interesting because they will make us better than before.]
    • “Mistakes or disappointments are lessons that teach us not to make the same mistakes again.” [If we believe this, we will think that mistakes or disappointments are normal. And if we learn from our mistakes, we will find new ways to prevent ourselves from making the same mistakes again.]

At this point, the admin thinks that we can now distinguish which mindset can help us grow or make our lives better.
