Every decision made by emotion can lead to a life of turmoil.

Using emotions over reason can lead to many problems, such as conflicts and conflicts between coworkers or losing good opportunities.

Because people are affected by changes in every aspect, whether from external or internal factors. Many factors are uncontrollable, such as the arrival of COVID, the economic problems that follow, causing unemployment, loss of income, unemployment, stress, anxiety for working people. These things are all great emotional stimuli that cause many people who cannot control and manage their emotions to have problems in life.

Emotional Intelligence, or in Thai, emotional intelligence, is an interesting skill in this era because it will help us reduce the problem of using emotions to lead in every decision-making. It also helps us to work with others in society as well.

To understand what Emotional Intelligence is, let’s take a look at an example story from a fan page that happened in a company.

Such as the example of an incident that occurred in one company

On a busy Monday… While Ohm was busy with a huge amount of work due to the amount of work his boss had assigned to him, today was also the day the big boss would announce who would be the new department head (replacing the old one who had resigned).

Ohm has been working here for about 6-7 years and he thinks that he should get this position because in the past, the big boss often assigned him a lot of work to do regularly. And importantly, in this department, he is the most senior, so he is very confident that the position of department manager must be his for sure.

But things didn’t turn out that way … The big boss sent an email announcing the new department head, who was an outsider from a foreign company that was a giant in the industry.

Ohm, upon reading the email, was very angry and could not accept what had happened. He slapped the table loudly and got up and walked away from his desk. Ohm walked headlong to the general manager’s office because he wanted an explanation right now as to why he did not get this position.

When we arrived at the big boss’s room, the boss greeted Ohm by saying, “It’s good that you’ve come, Ohm. I just wanted to talk to you. Come and talk to me in my room.”

When Ohm entered the big boss’s room, he immediately started a topic by angrily saying, “Why didn’t the boss give me a chance? What’s wrong with me? Why don’t you see the value of the people inside? The people who have worked hard for the organization all along.”

“Wait, calm down. Listen to me first,” the boss tried to calm Ohm down.

“I think your boss is being unfair. Did he use me in the past? What’s wrong with me?” Ohm said in an angry tone.

“I never lied to you. Are you just imagining it? That’s just the way you are. That’s why I can’t make you my boss. Don’t you realize that none of your teammates want to work with you?”

“Because you can’t control your emotions, you can’t get along with other people, you complain about the slightest thing, you work and focus on your own performance, so many of your teammates asked to transfer departments because they couldn’t work with you. They even told me that if I let you be their boss, they would resign from the whole department.”

When Ohm heard this, he was stunned and replied, “The juniors in my team are not professional. I am a professional who focuses on results and does not come to work day to day. Moreover, I am confident that I am not like what my boss said.”

“Since that’s all you can think of, I don’t think we have anything more to talk about,” the boss said in a cold tone, and he looked very dissatisfied.

Ohm turned around and walked out of the boss’s room in a huff, grumbling all the way.

If Ohm does this, what will happen to his job? How will his work life end here?

It certainly wouldn’t be pretty, right? Because no one would want to work with him, and he wouldn’t want to work with anyone.

If this is the case, will the company, the big boss, or the new department head keep Ohm? What can we learn from Ohm’s story?

    The matter of Emotion

Letting emotions lead you in every decision (especially in work) is definitely going to ruin it. In fact, other aspects of life can ruin your life as well.

For example, Ohm’s condition of a loose nut, when he doesn’t get what he wants or is told something he doesn’t like, he can’t control his emotions or be professional. And if he responds while he’s in a bad mood, the consequences are only bad because at that time, emotions are the driving force, so he lacks reason completely.

Self-centered thinking, with bias, with a perspective that sees only one’s own importance as the most important, can also destroy opportunities and work performance. For example, when the boss tries to give feedback to lead to improvement, but Ohm himself sees it as a criticism, so there is no improvement or development in his weaknesses here.

Therefore , emotional intelligence is very important for working people.

If we can recognize and understand our emotions, and have methods and processes to control them, we will be able to live, work, and work with others more easily and happily.

And importantly, emotional intelligence has been ranked as an important skill that workers must have in this era (ranked 6th among the skills that employers in this era and the next – The 10 Top Skills That Will Land You High-Paying Jobs by 2020 , According to the World Economic Forum).

Therefore, if we don’t have or don’t learn this skill, we will definitely miss out on good job opportunities or upcoming opportunities because from now on, in every step of our lives, we will have to face many rapid changes. If we don’t have Emotional Intelligence skills to help us manage our emotions, in the end, we will become slaves to our emotions by default.
